French Coast Book Debut

FrenchCoast_Final Cover 1.28Here’s a treat for those of you who want to jumpstart your summer reading–anytime of year. Anita Hughes is a prolific author who writes stylish contemporary fiction. Her latest book is French Coast, a love story set in the south of France. Anita and I recently had a joint booksigning at the legendary Warwick’s Bookstore in La Jolla, where we were launching our French-themed novels together. (And I adore her husband for bringing the wine and cheese!)

Here’s the set-up for French Coast, another delightful book in this blog series of books set in France:

From the author of Monarch Beach comes a beautiful story of loyalty and love in the luxurious city of Cannes in the South of France. Serena, a young features editor at Vogue, is given the opportunity of a lifetime when she is asked to spend a month in France interviewing the infamous editor-in-chief of French Vogue. Upon arrival, she learns a devastating secret about her family which causes her faith in her parents and boyfriend to crumble. Through her world seems to suddenly crack into a million pieces, Serena uses some new-found friendships, her investigative journalism skills, and luck to find the true meaning of family and what it means to love another. Each of Anita’s books take place in a luxurious location that often take on a character of their own, and this novel is no different. The wonderful backdrop of the Cote D’Azur in French Coast is the foundation of the beautiful imagery, delectable food, and high fashion in this stunning story.

Author Interview

Anita and I visited, and I had a few questions for her to share with you, so here goes…

What inspired you to write FRENCH COAST?

20101121_FFF_0023-EditcMy parents are European and my mother always talked about the Carlton-Intercontinental Hotel in Cannes. It sounded so glamorous with its marble lobby and yellow and white beach umbrellas and cabanas on the sand. Then I always remember the first time I saw TO CATCH A THIEF with Cary Grant and Grace Kelly (which is also set at the Carlton). It made the French Riviera seem like the most gorgeous location. I watched the movie again recently and that’s what it inspired me to write FRENCH COAST.

What is your writing process?

Like many writers, I find if I write first thing in the morning I can get the words down easily. I try to write 1,000 words a day and I don’t move forward until I am completely happy with them. One thing I do that is a little different, is I sit in the dark at night and think up exactly what I’m going to write the next day. I usually do this for at least an hour and it works very well to get me prepared for the next morning’s writing.

What is your next book?

I am thrilled that I have two books coming out this year. My next book, called ROME IN LOVE, will be released by St. Martin’s Press on August 4th. ROME IN LOVE is about a young actress who gets the Audrey Hepburn role in the remake of ROMAN HOLIDAY. While in Rome, she discovers the letters of Audrey Hepburn in her hotel suite, and they help her sort out problems in her own life.  I love this book and I am very excited to share it with my readers.
Thank you for having me on your wonderful blog, Jan!
French Coast is a delicious, heartfelt novel of friendship, love, second chances, and fabulous clothes set on the shores of the sparkling azure waters of the French Riviera.
